Wiki Loves Monuments
World's largest photo competition in the UAE
1 September — 30 September 2018
Do you use Wikipedia? We all do. It is one of the world's most popular websites, receiving over 15 billion page views each month.
But did you know that Wikipedia doesn’t cover subjects on the United Arab Emirates nearly as well as it does on all the other parts of the world?
Of all of the millions of subjects you can read about on Wikipedia, subjects relating to the UAE have the least coverage. This is due to a number of reasons, but mainly because many people do not know that they can donate their photographs to Wikipedia.
Wiki Loves Monuments is a fun way to change that. This photography campaign is aimed at documenting the UAE through illustrations on Wikipedia. We are calling people across the country to grab a camera and create photographs showcasing the country's cultural heritage and upload them to crowdsourced Wikipedia, throughout the month of September 2018.
We need your help to visually celebrate the richness, diversity and beauty of the UAE. We want to encourage more people and groups to get involved with Wikipedia and help us to improve Wikipedia's coverage of the UAE.
Participating in Wiki Loves Monuments is really easy and straightforward. All you need to do is register an account on Wikipedia, and submit your entries.
You can use list of cultural properties of national significance in the UAE on Wikipedia to find eligible sites to photograph.
If you encounter problems entering, please feel free to drop us a line using the contact form below.
Once campaign is over, a panel of photographic experts will evaluate the best entries according to criteria of quality, originality and usefulness of the image to Wikipedia. The shortlisted photographs will be used to illustrate the relevant articles on Wikipedia, with a potential audience in the hundreds of millions.

What is Wiki Loves Monuments?
Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photographic competition held during the month of September, organised worldwide by the popular online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. The aim of event is to highlight the cultural heritage sites of the participating countries with the goal to encourage people to capture pictures of these monuments, and to put them under a free licence which can then be re-used not only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone.
The first Wiki Loves Monuments competition was held in 2010 in the Netherlands. The next year it spread to other countries in Europe and according to the Guinness Book of Records, the 2011 edition of the Wiki Loves Monuments broke the world record for the largest photography competition. Since then, the photo competition has expanded to over 85 countries and has collected over 2 million monuments from over 70,000 participants. And now, for the first time ever, Wiki Loves Monuments is seeking images from across the UAE.
